The Art of Cheap Travel Insurance

Insurance (along with accommodation) is a Travel Agents biggest commission cheque - the cheap flights they lured you in with certainly don't pay their wages!

How to get the cheapest online Travel Insurance

Getting the Cheapest Insurance is easy when you shop around. The online market for selling travel insurance is very competitive so the longer you look, the more you can save!

1. Google Searches - Sponsors will compete on price
Organic Results are more established sites. For insurance, Sponsored Links will compete on price
Sponsored Links on Google are likely to compete on price
which is handy when you want cheap insurance enlarge

1. Google is your friend - Booking Online Travel Insurance is just like booking a rental car, a flight or accomodation - use Google to find the insurers and then compare their prices to find the best deal!

Steps to consider:

  1. Search Google for terms like 'Travel Insurance', 'Cheap Travel Insurance' and 'Discount Travel Insurance'
  2. Give the top few sites a minute or two each of your time to get a quote
    * If they are unable to issue an instant quote, ignore them - Insurers who don't have a web quoting system are not likely to be competing on price
  3. Make a list of the price from each website and then go back to the cheapest one later
  4. Check the policy wordings of each quote in order of price
  5. Buy the policy! (with a promo code if possible!)

A lot of insurance websites on-sell policies from large Insurers like Lloyds and Allianz. In general, there will be little price and policy wording variation between policies that originate with the same Insurer.

2. Promo Codes - Why pay full price?
Google the name of the insurer with 'promo code'
Search for '<Insurer Name> promo code'

2. Coupon and Promo Codes - Most of the time, you have a good chance of finding a 5% discount for online travel insurance just be searching google for '<Insurer Name> Promo Code'.

Often, these Promo Codes can be out of date. If Google sends you to a web forum, make sure you view the latest entries (probably the last page) for the topic.

3. Free Travel Insurance - 'Gold' and 'Platinum' Credit Cards often come with free Travel Insurance. Although they carry annual fees (and will probably require you to purchase the airfare using their card), it can work out to be a pretty good deal if you travel regularly. Make sure you read the fine print - it may have a time limit on your trip.

4. Policy Wordings - Don't be caught out! - When it comes to Insurance, the fine print is very important.

Case Study:
Recently, while booking some Travel Insurance for a group of friends, a lot of online quotes were originating from Allianz that all had policy wordings stating Epidemics were an an uninsurable event in regards to cancellation. Given that we were purchasing the policy well in advance because of the prospect of Swine Flu reaching epidemic proportions with the possibility of it causing our trips cancellation, we ended up going with a slightly more expensive policy that originated from Lloyds because it did cover cancellation in the event of an epidemic. Make sure you read your policies terms and conditions thouroughly before committing to it!
